New York–Patek Philippe’s Ref. 3974 has set a new world record for a timepiece sold at auction, selling for $1.2 million at Antiquorum’s Dec. 9 sale.

It’s been quite a holiday season for the auction house thus far, with sales at the New York auction–dubbed "Celebrating 35 Years of Making History in Time"–totaling $9,237,600. Eighty-five percent of the auction’s timepieces were sold by lot, with 135 percent sold by value.

Patek Philippe sets new world record at auction

A Patek Philippe Yellow Gold Calibre 89 pocket watch, the world’s most complex timepiece as mentioned by my colleague Ariel Adams last month, just sold for a world record price of CHF 5,120,000, or $5.068 million at Antiquorum’s 35th Anniversary Sale in Geneva.

Patek Philippe Pocket Watch Sells for $5 Million, Sets New World Record

Antiquorum concluded its 2009 auction in Hong Kong with an outstanding total of HKD 45,453,120 (CHF 6,397,981 or $5.8 million). Of the 479 lots that were offered for sale in the auction, 82% were sold representing 115% of the estimated value. There was standing room only at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel with over 250 internet bidders from over 40 countries around the world.

Antiquorum Concludes Formidable Auction in Hong Kong | Luxury News & Watch Information

The watch community gets really excited when Antiquorum has one of their highly publicized watch auctions. To garner a lot of attention they find a combination of ‘celebrity’ and rare watches.

$1.3 Million Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon Ref. 5002P Watch Up For Auction – Luxist

The top lot in Antiquorum’s final auction of 2008 was Patek Philippe’s Ref. 5016 in platinum, which fetched $660,000.

New York–Antiquorum closed its 2008 season last week, netting a total of $7,279,620 in a New York sale of Important Collectors’ Wristwatches, Pocket Watches and Clocks.

More than 388 online bidders competed with telephone and commission bidders for the 542 lots in the Dec. 10-11 sale. The lots offered sold at 105 percent of their estimate, and 75 percent of all lots sold.

The highlight of the sale was lot 538, a Patek Philippe Ref. 5016 in platinum, which fetched $660,000. A number of additional Patek Philippe models achieved excellent prices, including Ref. 5004R (lot 535), which sold for $360,000, and Ref. 5013 (lot 374), which sold for $468,000. The brand’s Ref. 3970 has continued to see interest from collectors, and a white gold version (lot 530) sold for $117,600, while a platinum model (lot 537) sold for $132,000. Lastly, Ref. T150 (lot 148), retailed by Tiffany and Co., realized $38,400.
