A movement with exceptional features contained in a case of classic elegance, created using the most noble of materials: Officine Panerai presents the Luminor 1950 8 Days Rattrapante Pink Gold 47 mm, a chronograph of outstanding technical and aesthetic prestige, produced in a numbered edition of 300 and equipped with the new Manifattura P.2006 split-seconds chronograph calibre.
The split-seconds chronograph – one of the most captivating mechanical specialties in the sector of split time measurement – is composed of two overlapping hands, one of which may be repeatedly stopped and then realigned with the other without interfering with the action of the latter. The split-seconds chronograph can for example be used to measure two events beginning at the same time, or to calculate, lap after lap, the times of an athlete or vehicle without halting the overall timing.
The new calibre was created at the Officine Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel and is one of the extremely rare rattrapante models in which, thanks to the technical level of the movement itself, all the functions are controlled by just two push pieces, rather than the usual three, and has a power autonomy of 8 days.
The movement of the new Luminor 1950 is the P.2006/3 calibre, developed and produced at the Officine Panerai manufacture and based on the P.2004 calibre. It is a manual wind movement which, thanks to its three barrels, can work uninterrupted for 8 days before being wound again. Featuring a diameter of 13¾ lignes and more than 350 components, the P.2006/3 has a chronographic function with vertical clutch to avoid any uncertainty in the start of measurement and, in contrast to the P.2004, has a double column wheel guaranteeing, among other benefits, perfect sequencing of the start, stop, split-second, realignment and zero setting phases of the chronograph hands. For even greater precision, the small seconds hand automatically positions itself on zero when the crown is pulled out to set the time.
The case, evoking the classic sizes of historical Panerai models, measures 47 mm in diameter and is in brushed pink gold, in contrast to the polished bezel. On the right hand side there is the classic crown-protecting device guaranteeing total waterproofing. This device was designed by Officine Panerai over 60 years ago, and has characterized all Luminor models ever since. On the left hand side there are two chronograph push-pieces: one at 8 o’clock regulating the start, stop and reset functions for the first hand, and one at 10 o’clock starting the split-seconds function, in other words it stops the second hand and then re-aligns it with the first one. Water-resistant to a depth of 100 metres, the case back features a large sapphire crystal window permitting the exclusive in-house movement to be admired.
The dial, also a reminder of the historical models, is dark brown and has a ‘sandwich’ structure, with the luminescent substance between two layers and with large Arab numerals and indexes carved into the upper layer. Also luminescent are the hour and minute hands and the sub-dial hands: on the left the ‘small’ seconds in constant motion and on the right the chrono minutes counter with a hand moving forward at minute intervals, thus guaranteeing greater precision of reading. In the lower section is the indication of power reserve which is represented – another special feature – using a linear luminescent cursor instead of the usual hand. Finally, the 2 mm thick, anti-reflective sapphire crystal built to resist even at great depths, especially convex close to the edges giving the dial superior luminosity.
Identified by the reference PAM00319, the Luminor 1950 8 Days Rattrapante Pink Gold 47 mm is supplied with an alligator strap complete with an adjustable pink gold buckle. It is also supplied with a spare strap and a small steel screwdriver to replace the strap.
