Dubai , UAE – April 30, 2009

Every tradition begins with an innovation. And occasionally, innovations become milestones in history foreshadowing a sense of magnificence for years to come. One of these events occurred eighty years ago in 1924. It was the year in which timeless classics like the Wagenfeld lamp and the “Montblanc 149” fountain pen first saw the light of day.

Detail from a painting of Marie Antoinette with the Rose by Louise Elizabeth Vigee Le BrunAn audacious museum heist, in which a timepiece made for Marie Antoinette was among a haul worth hundreds of millions of pounds, left police clutching at thin air. It was only when the watch turned up 25 years later that the pieces of the jigsaw began to fall into place.

2009 Patek Philippe Lady Nautilus Watch

I hope that the new women’s version of the Patek Philippe Nautilus watch is a sign of future updates for the men’s version. No I don’t mean the diamonds, but rather the bolder looking face. A few years ago the Rolex Submariner got the "Maxidial" treatment that increased the size of the hands and hour indicators making it easier to read and more pronounced. It looks like Patek Philippe might be taking this same direction with the Nautilus watches (if this Ladies Nautilus is any evidence).

imageGARAVELLI Design Italy, one of Italy’s more prominent fine jewellery
producers, just launched their first eco-conscious  collection. In an effort to empower consumers, by introducing a fine jewellery option that goes beyond the surface, GARAVELLI presented to the public their GLOBO Collection, crafted in ethically mined 18kt gold at the last Basel Fair in Switzerland.

As the spokesperson for GARAVELLI, her family’s business soon approaching its 100th anniversary, Elisabetta Molina shares her views on the future.

"We are all well-aware that mining activities in several countries
have been accused of causing extensive harm to humans and to the  environment. As a mother of two little girls, I just cannot help but
try to make a positive difference and ensure a better future for all
of us. With this latest effort, GARAVELLI will open a very important
chapter in the preservation of the environment, one that I hope other jewellery designers will want to
consider".

This is probably the first regulator watch from Piaget that I have seen, and it is the Emperador Coussin Regulator. For those who don’t know, a "regulator" is a watch that uses the main dial for the minutes, and a smaller dial for the hours. Piaget even took the traditional regulator watch theme a step further and added a 30 second retrograde seconds counter. The counter located at the top of the face will count 30 seconds and then the indicator hand will snap back to zero position and start over. The retrograde seconds counter isn’t about functionality, but is merely a fun complication to observe. To do this, Piaget uses its in-house made Calibre 835P hand-wound mechanical movement that is just 3.92mm thick (very thin). Power reserve is 65 hours.
